A shelf is used for collecting and arranging things. An empty shelf shows little.

Dodecaphonic principles arrange a composition for the shelf, based on its resonant frequencies.

Phonographic memories of six unique scenes are put into the shelf.

A guidebook describes one of those places: The cave is damp and warm, at the beginning still flat in the interior and then quickly becoming slippery and full of rough stones. If you are alone and without a good flashlight, an inspection of the 150 m deep cave is dangerous or even impossible. In the cave you can hear bats; additional occupants are big yellow spiders.

The idea behind Flame is to develop customized furniture at a low price. Every piece is unique,  developed together with the client and build in a day. The furniture are made out of spruce with a rough-saw finish in standard sizes known from construction sites where it is used as posts and planks. For a smooth and water-resistent finish the furniture get burned at the end. Flame is an experiment in the field of low-tech mass customization. 4 metal-shelves become a 12 channel sound system to carry audio-memories. Voltages are converted to mechanical movement of a piezoelectric polymer film, attached to and extended by the metalshelf.

Ein Regal dient zum Horten und Ordnen von Dingen. Viele dieser Dinge stehen stellvertretend für reale und fiktive Ereignisse oder sind selbst Auslagerungen bzw. Erweiterungen unseres Körpers oder unseres Gehirns. Ein leeres Regal erzählt wenig über dessen Besitzer.

Die Komposition ist zu einem Teil eine Sonifikation der Regale selbst. Ausgehend von den Grundfrequenzen der Regalflächen definiert ein dodekaphonisches Prinzip die Tonhöhen, Tondauern, Lautstärken und die zu klingenden Regalflächen aus jeweils 12 Möglichkeiten.

Der andere Teil besteht aus Auslagerungen meines auditiven Gedächtnisses. Ich projiziere sechs für mich bedeutende stereophone Aufnahmen besonderer Momente und Orte, auf die zwölf Flächen der Regale.

Ein Reiseführer beschreibt einen der sechs Orte: Die Höhle ist feuchtwarm, anfangs im Inneren noch flach, dann jedoch schnell grobsteinig und schmierig-glitschig. Alleine und ohne eine gute Taschenlampe ist eine Begehung der sich etwa 150 m in die Tiefe erstreckenden Höhle gefährlich bzw. nicht möglich. In der Höhle hört man Fledermäuse; weitere Bewohner sind große, gelbe Spinnen.

Spaceinvader, as project architect, was more bound to earth due to his responsibility to execute the project. His approach was to focus on the spatial qualities of the existing shop. His approach is to take the regional tradition of countrified furniture and to merge them into a huge backwall..

Echo Rotation

A ‘moving head’ light is adapted out of its club context and is used to
emit sharp pulses of sound instead of light. The reflections of the sound
waves behave similarly to light by delivering explicit information about
their surroundings. The speaker rotates on two axes and thereby reveals
the total architectural space of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt - an
invitation to listen to the building and discover one’s own echo location
competence.

A spectacular best of show, looking for golden loopholes, and working on becoming a wider wilder line. Featuring Bastard League classics like Istan Kurd and Dora Diamanti, The Queen of Eggs, the great Mapinguary, the Hairy Leg, and brand - new slicky stuff from the Wild Diamont Gang.

“The League Of Extraordinary Bastards” was assembled by Elke Auer and Esther Straganz in Sao Paolo, Brasil in 2008. A handful of monsters were recruited to deal with questions of normativity and desire, radically extended, stretched, knotted and fragmented bodies, subject constructions, and drag.

Both artists proudly show a diamond as their identifying feature tattooed in their arm, its a symbol of togetherness. Space invader realised a diamond as a spatial installation at their exhibition. By entering the room, the spectator stands inside the diamond and enjoys to be become for a glimpse part of the diamond gang.

Gin Gin

A whisky-fountain for Jimmy Zurek´s groupshow Gin-Palace in Vienna.

A waterproof speaker, attached to a cocktailglass generates different patterns on the surface of the whisky. Low frequency sine tones create moving shapes, triggered by the sound of different glasses clinking which are played back on the glasscube above by a transducer, using glass as a membrane.

Herr Gott aka Mister God

Mister GOD demands from Stefan STERZINGER to play more Wienerlieder, a particular kind of viennese folk music which is primarily enjoyed by slightly tipsy guests of a vine tavern, which those drunk little fellows (locals) actually call a “Heurigen”…
Anyway, Sterzinger is slightly offended my Mister God’s uncivilized request and starts to remember the music roots he is proud of (blues!) how his music career started and what the simple basis for happiness is.
You’ve guessed it: it is s!x, drugs n rock n roll…and a few more other pretty good things.

12-channel-soundsystem made of industrial readymades.

It was propably 2005 when a cheap metal shelf of similar origin heavily injured me. It was one of Christina´s that collapsed when she moved around her furniture. I tried to prevent the shelf from total breakdown and cut through my arm, so deep that I could see my vein.

We trashed all shelves in fear. Recently Christina told me: “i still very much fear that shelves (…) whenever i see one of them fear eats my soul.” Some years later, when I moved to Berlin I discovered the Grundregal TYP GR_150 at OBI Baumarkt. When assembling the second one slightly excited, I found out two things:

1. A way to assemble it with just minimal changes in order to effect the maximal uselessness of the product’s major tasks.

2. A cheap piezo from Conrad electronics can give it a whole new function. It becomes an instrument.

As my soundcard has 12 analogue outputs i decided to arrange four of them to a 12 channel soundsystem. Voltages are converted to mechanical movement of a piezoelectric polymer film, attached to and extended by the metalshelf.

The first composition currently screening in Berlin-Siemensstadt derives from the unusual atmosphere of that usually not accessible office-building. After some studies with sinustones and dodecaphonic composition rules assigned from pitch to positions in space i decided to absorb and reflect my own office-space sensation.

I created an infinite downward spiral out of risset tones and the recordings of fire. After some minutes of contemplative listening you feel as if your body keeps falling down.

If you don´t like stupid stories you are welcome to experience the thing as the sound of recession, attached to an object. An empty shelf…

archi.pH.art joins DIVANY

who the £&$% is archi.pH.art ?

archi.pH.art was founded in London in 2007 by two individuals who first meet in 2006 at Will Alsop’s London based office. Those two individuals decided it might be time to work in the field of architecture, philosophy and art without linking one’s personality, gender, pretty or unpretty face to the actual outcome of a collaboration. archi.pH.art is rather a state of mind than an office name or a ”brand”…

what has archi.pH.art done so far..or….how did it start?

archi.pH.art won in September 2007 “Tutti Frutti”, an architecture competition initiated by the UK based developers Urban Splash.

Since then archi.pH.art contiuously expanded, morphed, transformed and can be seen like a continuously changing platform of various collaborations. Works include architectural reflections, pieces for and with musicians, productions of visuals for audio situations, designs of furniture, and guess what…right now we are writing stuff on the DIVANY site…and, basically, we just do and work on things we find interesting, fascinating…all the good stuff surrounding us and trying making the less good things a tiny bit better…it is all about encounter, isn’t it?

!!NEW ARTY ARTY MUSEUM IN MUNDANE LAA AN DER THAYA!!
ITS UNBELIEVABLE - CHECK IT OUT!

The express train from vienna stops in Laa a. d.Thaya. Immediatley behind the small city starts the border to the Czech republic. Due to its geographic isolation and the former era of the iron curtain, the small city recently undertakes many efforts to reposition itself as a touristically and economically valuable place. In 1989 the thermae „Laa“ was discovered and exploited for the increasing wellness tourism – in the course a hotel was built by „stararchitect“ Prof. Wilhelm Holzbauer.

As a next step the brutalist silo, which is prominently positioned in the line of sight of the hotel, was transformed by the two artist Christian Mayer and Sonja Laimer in cooperation with space invader as architect. The the two artists didn`t want a mere beautification of the silo but an transformation of its perception.

„Museum Laa an der Thaya – the new museum for contempoary art will emerge here soon“ is written on the huge poster which was mounted on the silo at the end of august. An architectural design for the mueseum extension can be seen next to the anouncement. The design uses the existing silo as the base of the extension and a big terrace. The design and visual lpresentation of the museum can be regarded as a critical reference to contempoary museums buildings designed by so called star architects - architecture has to fulfill a certain purpose: uniqueness in order to ascend into the olymp of iconic buildings which results in high media attention and coverage – direct economic capital.

The validity of the poster was left to the viewer. An official opening was organised as the public sensitization of the silo was an important part of the project. The reaction of the local population as well of the guests of the hotel was documented by a film team. Needs Laa a.d. Thaya a museum? What are the advantages of a contempoary museum for the city? Is there any place for this kind of architecture? Which role plays architecture and art for city branding?

A year later a book will be published. It will not only document the whole process and reactions but also intends to stimulate a broader discussion by contributing texts about the potential and dangers of art and architecture beeing instrumentalized as image branding and impulse for regional developments. After two years the poster will be demounted. If the silo will be left blank or used as advertising space or as playground for further projections and ideas depends on the municipality.

KRIXEL MODELING AFTERNOON

the spezial theme was to model a freak with one of the following themes:

- a liliputian scavenger sheep with excessively bulging tongue and very imposing shell .
- a parasite whale with particularly ramified mouth and venomous tongue .
- an hermaphrodite snake with entirely fat claws and strongly flat head .
- a floating omnivorous elephant with extremely streaked back and swollen wings .

- a terrifying amphibian hawk with metallic teeth and antenna that rotate in a spezial way .
